In Steins;Gate, Rintaro Okabe's journey is heavily influenced by his evolving self-efficacy. His belief in his ability to change outcomes and control the course of events fluctuates throughout the series, and these changes directly impact his motivation, perseverance, and overall goal striving. At the start of Steins;Gate, Okabe exhibits high self-efficacy, although it's tied to his eccentric persona as a "mad scientist." He believes strongly in his ability to push the boundaries of science, create inventions, and uncover conspiracies. His confidence is bolstered by his self-proclaimed identity as “Hououin Kyouma,” which acts as a mental shield, allowing him to pursue risky and unconventional projects. His early high self-efficacy is a significant source of motivation, pushing him to experiment with time travel technology and assume he can control its outcomes. Okabe’s confidence and sense of self-efficacy are further reinforced when he discovers the success of the ...

Rintaro Okabe is a great example when it comes to analyzing emotions using Appraisal Theories of Emotion. Okabe fits well within the framework of appraisal theory in several ways. Around episode 12, Okabe repeatedly watched his childhood friend Mayuri die after altering timelines. Mayuri is Okabe’s closest friend, so her safety is very important to him. The relevance of the situation is extremely high, which triggers a strong emotional response. Okabe initially believes that he has control over the timeline changes through his invention, the D-Mail (how he does time travel between different timelines), but quickly realizes that he cannot control Mayuri’s fate. This perceived lack of control deepens his despair. Additionally, he believes that no matter what he does, Mayuri will die in every timeline, which creates hopelessness. He loses faith in a future where she survives. This appraisal leads to despair and helplessness, as Okabe feels trapped by fate and his inability to save M...

I am going to do a character analysis of Rintaro Okabe’s motivations and Emotions. Rintaro Okabe, also known by his self-proclaimed nickname “Hououin Kyouma,” is the main character of Steins;Gate . He is a university student and the founder of the “Future Gadget Laboratory,” a small group of friends dedicated to creating experimental gadgets (mostly non-useful). Okabe is eccentric, often speaking in dramatic, grandiose ways and acting like a “mad scientist” battling an imaginary organization. Despite sometimes Okabe has erratic and paranoid behaviors, he is highly intelligent and cares about his friends deeply. Rintaro Okabe has several evolving goals throughout the story, which change as the plot progresses and as he learns more about the consequences of time travel. At the start of the story, Okabe is driven by his curiosity about science and his desire to push boundaries. His initial goal is to explore the potential of his accidental discovery of time travel through the “Phone Micro...
